The Bible is always clear on the decision of serving the Lord. No man takes that decision for a person. It is something you have to do with a willing heart. In the scripture Joshua 24:15, the Bible says “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, o the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
In the above passage, Joshua was talking to the Israelites about choosing to serve God. He started addressing them by telling them of the numerous things God had done for them in Joshua 24:2-13 But one thing is sure. He did not in any way issue a command to serve the Lord unto them, this is because no one can force another to serve God. It is a personal decision and something with absolute sincerity
THE LIFE OF JOSHUA
Joshua did not begin his leadership of the children of Egypt out of the blues and that is why he could boldly say he will serve the Lord with his household. This is because before he became their leader, he served under Moses for 40 years. The knowledge of how Joshua served under Moses for 40 years as his aid and confidant is quite overwhelming Joshua had seen the awesomeness of service to God; therefore he could boldly say to the Israelites “as for me and my house we will serve the lord” These were the words of a man who had tasted of the goodness of the Lord and could attest to it.
Was Joshua actually speaking out of convinction?
Joshua was not guessing if serving the Lord was worth it or not. He had spent years serving the Lord under his master ‘Moses’; therefore, he knew their history for years on how the Lord had manifested in diverse ways. Joshua knew how to lead as he had seen Moses do it for decades; he knew the fickleness of the Israelites because he had witnessed their complaining, rebellion, grumbling, and the consequences that accompanied it; that is why he urged them to ‘choose’ for themselves who they will serve.
CHOOSE THIS DAY WHOM YE WILL SERVE – AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD
Joshua was trying to point out to the children of Israel that they cannot serve God + other gods. They had to make a choice to serve God totally or serve other gods. It is precisely the same for Christians today. It is appalling that many Christians today forget God’s word and standard and feel they can serve other gods from Monday to Saturday and show up in Church on Sunday to worship God. God is not a little kid that can is easy to deceive. Humans can make the world think they are Christians when their hearts are far from God; however, the Lord sees the depths of our hearts; he knows precisely people that are serving him in spirit and truth, and he will reward everyone according to his works.
The bible in Revelation chapter 3:20 says
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
Service to God is entirely a matter of choice. Please choose wisely.
